A Statement from Poder NC Action About Closing
Closing by the end of 2025; Practicing “Hope as a Discipline”
From day one, Poder NC didn’t want to do politics as usual. We believed that millions of young Latinxs deserved more than an outreach program that treated them like a transaction, that they could be the architects of a new political future. After all, our state has innovated things that seemed unimaginable like putting people in the sky, believing that we could ascend and fly, too; we are a state that birthed student activism that transformed our nation. Through art, storytelling, and cultura, we proved that cultural organizing has the power to excite and transform hearts and minds, making civic participation not just a duty, but a celebration of who we are.
After six incredible years, Poder NC will be closing its doors at the end of 2025. Everything has a life cycle, and organizations are no different. While this marks the end of Poder NC as an entity, the power we’ve built together with nuestra gente endures. The organizing skills, political consciousness, and community connections forged through our work continue as building blocks for building people power across North Carolina.
This decision didn’t come easily. We did everything we could to keep Poder alive—fundraising around the clock, exploring leadership transitions, working with consultants to reimagine our structure, adjusting our programs to meet the moment, and pursuing every possible avenue to sustain this work. We have come to a point where we are choosing to close with care and intention, rather than continuing to struggle through adverse conditions that inhibit us from doing the audacious work we’ve been known for. We want our community to know that we fought valiantly to keep our doors open, but—like too many other organizations across our state and nation—we faced the perfect storm: systemic dysfunction, a political climate anchored by fear, and—despite the best of intentions—a bureaucratic and risk-averse culture of philanthropy that makes bold approaches like ours challenging to fund.
We acknowledge and deeply thank the community members, partners, staff, friends, and funders who were in the trenches with us, doing everything in their power to keep the organization going.
As we reflect on the past 6 years, we have so much to be proud of:
- Our Youth Summits in 2020 and 2023 created space for young people to deepen their organizing skills and grow in their leadership journey.
- Three iterations of our People Power School from 2021-2023 gave attendees an insider’s look at our civic structure, and how we can strategically direct our energy through cogovernance.
- At our two Ballots y Belleza events in 2024, we created dynamic spaces filled with bright warm colors, flowers, joy, and dozens of Black and brown beauty service providers, as the backdrop for registered voters to come and learn about their ballot from a Poder ambassador, and then receive a free beauty service before going to vote early with confidence.
- We shifted the culture around young people voting to a celebratory rite of passage through our 2022 digital ad, which we created as evergreen content and is in use this year to encourage municipal electoral participation.
- Our 2024 Early Voting Bus Tour, 2022 Abrazo de Poder events, and our 2020 Parties at the Polls brought that same celebratory energy to voters of all ages, through games, live music, and comida from small business owners.
- Also in 2024, we produced two telenovela-style digital ads that pushed the boundaries of electoral communications; “Alexia the Voter” told the story of a young woman who finds her voice and steps into her power in both her personal and political life. “Love is a Choice” offered an intimate portrait of a young couple navigating challenging decisions around pregnancy, while they watch the erosion of reproductive rights nationwide. The second ad won a Reed Award, and the two ads together made 1.5 million impressions on voters in North Carolina alone.
- Over the course of three election cycles, we produced 20 original political mailers; everything from Lotería cards, superhero posters, to a 4-part comic telling the story of how we the people wield the power to shape all three branches of government.
The highlight reel above leaves out so much more important work produced by our past and present staff, interns, fellows, members, and volunteers: countless pieces of social media content providing engaging and accessible political education; over a dozen Social Hours and other community events inviting people to find and claim their political home; and hundreds of thousands of phone calls and texts sent during elections.
Together, we proved that culturally rooted organizing isn’t optional for social justice movements—it’s essential. Because of nuestra gente–our community, our base–Poder NC’s work reached millions of voters, including those outside of our state! Every time our people showed up, we sowed seeds of hope together.
Earlier this year we shared the wisdom of Mariame Kaba who imparted: “Hope is a discipline.” Indeed it is, and hope is a practice, too. We practice hope by being courageous enough to face the truth, retaining our political imagination, and doing the painstaking work of power-building, even through hellish conditions and against all odds. And, above all, we practice hope by leaning on one another and choosing to be in community.
Our state still needs organizers and leaders who understand that civic engagement must honor our cultures while advancing a progressive agenda for our people. We hope that everyone who has been a part of Poder NC carries this work forward by supporting values-aligned organizations in our state, and by imagining political power beyond our status quo structures.
Here’s what you can expect in the coming weeks: We will host a final celebration of our Poder on Sunday, November 9th, at the restaurant Centro in downtown Raleigh. RSVP here. All supporters of our work are invited to join us, as we mark this transition as we always have: in community, with joy and celebration. Also in the coming weeks, our executive leadership team (forever and affectionately known as our HBICs) will share their Lessons in Leadership as a Love Letter to North Carolina.
We are forever grateful to those that chose to build people power with us. You believed in our vision, and now we believe in you to carry Poder’s mission forward. There is still so much work to be done—but we know you will keep showing up, organizing, and demanding the dignity and representation we all deserve.
Con mucho, mucho amor y gratitud,
The Poder NC Team

Contact: Irene Godínez | irene@podernc.org
Raleigh, NC — Poder NC Action has launched a groundbreaking Reproductive Justice Novela Video Campaign aimed at mobilizing Latino voters to vote for Democrats in the upcoming November elections. With a deep focus on reproductive justice, the campaign highlights the critical issues that directly impact Latino communities, such as access to healthcare, economic stability, and the right to make personal choices about family planning.
Irene Godínez, Founder and Co-Executive Director of Poder NC Action, has been at the forefront of the movement to increase Latinx voter turnout in North Carolina. Poder NC Action is recognized for running one of the most robust Latino voter outreach programs in the state, leveraging innovative strategies such as their highly successful mail program to engage voters. With this new video campaign, Poder NC is once again setting the bar for innovative voter engagement, using cultural storytelling in a telenovela format to communicate the stakes of the upcoming election.
“I grew up watching telenovelas with my family, and whether you love them or not, we know how deeply they resonate with our community,” says Godínez. “This campaign takes that storytelling tradition and connects it with the real-life struggles many Latinos face around reproductive justice. Our goal is to encourage more Latinos to vote for leaders who will champion our rights, our families, and our futures.”
Key Highlights of the Campaign:
-
Cultural Storytelling Format: The video campaign will feature a series of short novelas that draw viewers in with relatable characters and storylines that reflect the realities of reproductive justice for Latino families.
-
Bilingual Outreach: The campaign is designed to reach both English and Spanish-speaking voters, ensuring that the message resonates across generational lines.
-
Grassroots Distribution: Videos will be shared via social media platforms, WhatsApp groups, and in-person community events, creating a personal touch and local connection.
Poder NC Action’s Reproductive Justice Novela Video Campaign is part of a broader strategy to mobilize Latinx voters in a state that has seen rising Latino influence in recent elections. The organization is already known for its innovative mail program, which has distinguished itself by delivering personalized, culturally relevant messages to Latinx households.
In a year where reproductive justice is a major issue on the ballot, Godínez and her team are dedicated to making sure the voices of Latino voters are heard loud and clear. The stakes are high, and this video campaign brings much-needed visibility to the issues that matter most to the Latino community.

Official Statement: Biden’s Withdrawal From the Presidential Race Is An Opportunity That Voters Created; Trust and Honesty Is Essential for Voter Engagement and Turnout
Raleigh, North Carolina – On Sunday afternoon President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the Presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to run in his place. Poder NC Action celebrates the President’s decision to open the way for another candidate to run, as it will give voters a chance to save our nation’s democracy through their vote on November 5th and continued engagement post-elections.
Poder NC Action seeks to increase electoral participation of Latinx folks by building community around shared values to make them feel seen, and to grow their sense of self-efficacy in order to disrupt historic and/or inherited mistrust of government. This year’s election creates a unique opportunity to keep expanding the voting electorate by ushering Gen-Z to the polls. Combined with millennial voters, they make up the largest, most racially diverse and progressive cohort of voters that this nation has ever seen. North Carolina will gain 50,000 new Latinx voters each year as our community continues to age into the electorate.
Anecdotally, younger voters expressed little confidence that they would truly be represented by any presidential candidate or political party given the lack of representation on the ballot after the results of this year’s primary elections. Democratic Party leaders, political operatives, civic and community leaders must be forthcoming with voters if they hope to earn their trust and vote. Younger voters knew well that they deserved a candidate who could reinvigorate the fight against fascism and made their voices heard through their uncommitted primary votes and through encampments at U.S colleges and universities this spring in support of Palestine, in addition to urging the DNC Executive Committee to present a viable presidential candidate.
Unlike older generations, gen-z and millennials could not afford to buy into the concept of the “American Dream.” They have witnessed their peers fight unnecessary wars overseas to catastrophic climate change, gun violence, and financial devastation. They have been outspoken about the need for transformative systemic changes in every facet of life in order for our nation to see its best days yet.
“We are more optimistic than ever this election cycle about the possibility of having a real opportunity to fight off fascism now that President Joe Biden listened to voter concerns and is withdrawing from the Presidential race,” said Irene Godínez, Founder & Co-Executive Director of Poder NC Action.
“President Biden has expressed his full support of Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee and while we don’t align 100% with VP Harris, we support the choice of a new candidate who will bring a renewed spirit to the fight of our lives. We commit to working as hard to hold the Democratic nominee accountable once elected and will continue to agitate the Democratic Party to live into their professed values as we fight for the soul of our nation.”

Official Statement: Democratic Party Leadership Have An Opportunity To Change
Poder NC Action is an organization that believes in the transformative power of people coming together to improve our communities through our collective contributions. Our organizational mission is to increase electoral participation of Latinx folks by building community around shared values to make them feel seen, and to grow their sense of self-efficacy in order to disrupt historic and/or inherited mistrust of government.
We call on the Executive Committee of the Democratic National Committee and the nearly 3,900 pledged delegates to act in the best interest of those who will experience most drastically the consequences of this upcoming election - marginalized communities including: young voters, Black, brown, and LGBTQ+ people-by nominating a viable contender for the position of Democratic Nominee for President.
There is still time to give voters a real choice for President in the most consequential election of their lives. In order to maintain the voter turnout of 2020 and even increase it, we need the Executive Committee of the DNC to put the well-being of our entire nation ahead of any one individual.
Our communities are courageous. ¡Somos luchadores! We have no choice but to have spines of steel in order to survive day by day in a nation not built for us. We demand the same courage from people who have significant power and who are leading the Democratic Party.
This current moment should force all of us to imagine cosas chingonas. What type of country do we want to live in? What do we want to leave for future generations? When united, our communities have a powerful voice in determining the future of this country and democracy. Black and brown people are tired of being used by political parties that continuously coerce our votes, but then ignore our cries, demands, and dreams. The marginalized communities of this nation are people of the global majority and we are seeing many examples–from Palestine solidarity encampments on U.S. college campuses, to demonstrations by working-class people from Mexico and France–of our communities tirelessly organizing to give their nations a chance to course-correct from the false choices presented to voters.
We recognize that what we are asking for is not easy. If the Executive Committee and Party Delegates of the DNC won’t stand up to their own leader in the best interest of our nation’s Democracy, the Party demonstrates that it doesn’t have the appetite nor stamina to fight the fascists who are moving swiftly on fulfilling their agenda which is eroding our Democracy in real time. If the Democratic Party leadership squanders this crisitunity – both, a crisis and an opportunity – to give us a fighting chance in the voting booth this November by nominating a better fighter, we will have surely lost the battle for the soul of this nation.
The time to act is NOW
Poder NC Action is a values-led statewide nonprofit organization that builds people power in the growing Latinx community in North Carolina. Our vision is to create a world where people’s needs are met and where we see ourselves reflected in political leadership.
