Poder NC Action has launched a groundbreaking Reproductive Justice Novela Video Campaign, “Love is a Choice” aimed at mobilizing Latinx voters to vote for Democrats in the upcoming November elections. With a deep focus on reproductive justice, the campaign highlights the critical issues that directly impact Latinx communities, such as access to healthcare, economic stability, and the right to make personal choices about family planning.

The novela shows the unfolding love story of D.J. and Maya, a young couple grappling with what to do with an unplanned pregnancy. Poder NC Action commissioned Womxn of the World Poetry Slam Champion and NC resident, Ayanna Florence to write a poem to narrate the three episode novela.  

The novela is less than 10 minutes, and the 30 second trailer also serves as a digital ad that is being served to Latinx voters in North Carolina, one of the last two states in the entire south to still have access to abortion. The novela is available in both English and Spanish.

A unique aspect of the story is the vocal role of the male partner. Research from our All Above All partners and HIT Strategies “found that while men of color support abortion access and view it as an important issue in determining how they vote, they’re unsure of their place in the abortion rights movement and were waiting to be invited in.” By writing men into the storyline, Poder NC Action hopes to usher men and all people into the conversation and battle for expanding bodily freedom, which is on the ballot this year. 

Poder NC Action hopes that people share the novelas, whether it’s the 30 second trailer or the three episodes, with their personal and professional networks so that as many voters as possible can see the novela and be persuaded to vote in order to keep politicians out of our personal decisions. Poder continues to showcase its creative prowess by finding a new way to tell the story of reproductive justice as a matter of dignity to a new audience in a familiar and relatable way.
